Local food – recipe for economic success

Through our involvement with the Thornton Fresh Food Coop, Transition Hull Co-ordinator Lausanne Tranter attended a conference in Leeds entitled Local Towns, Local Food in June 2012. The conference had been organised by the CPRE (Campaign to Protect Rural England).

This was an extremely interesting conference which showed how a thriving local food chain can benefit the quality of life, landscape and prosperity of an area. Supermarket expansion is a huge threat to local food economies and independent retailing, with centralised supply chains strangling the local shop.

The conference highlighted the results of the Food Web mapping exercise that CPRE has  undertaken in 19 areas – showing that local food is a recipe for economic success. Two of the areas mapped were in Yorkshire: Otley and Sheffield.  A high proportion of the 19 mapped areas were Transition towns, where local food is often high on the agenda.
