January is the time for apple tree pruning and the Growers’ Network have organised the following sessions to which volunteers are welcome:
Thur 5 January, 9.30 am – 2pm : Pruning skill share at Pickering Road Community Orchard Map Yvette Grindley from the orchard will be demonstrating the apple tree pruning technique, which the Growers Network are planning to film. For those of you who cannot attend but would like to learn about pruning, the short video will be shared on the Growers’ Network knowledgebase.
Sun 15 January, 10.00 am – 3 pm : Apple tree pruning session at the Millennium Orchard, Beverley Parks. Directions There are 100+ trees which are in need of some attention. Yvette from Pickering Road Commmunity Orchard will be there to oversee the session. By putting in some work in now, it is hoped to increase the yield of apples in the autumn. Please bring gardening gloves, tools such as secateurs if you have them, and a packed lunch.
Until the mid 20th century Hull and East Riding had an abundance of orchards and this is an attempt to renew interest in growing our own fruit.
