Report on Hull Green Fair 2013

The Green Fair is run by Hull Friends of the Earth. The 2013 Green Fair was held on 7 December 2013 at the Spring Bank Community Centre. There were loads of stalls, including many familiar faces and some new ventures. Children’s activities were provided by Yorkshire Wildlife Trust and Hull Home Educators.

The Green Café was provided by TimeBank Hull & East Riding as a training opportunity. The food was delicious, especially the home made soups, posh toasties and wonderful veggie salads. TimeBank offers opportunities to provide services in exchange for time credits which you can then exchange for other people’s services   http://www.timebankhullandeastriding.co.uk/

An eclectic mix of acoustic performances provided the sound track to the day. Transition Hull had its usual stall and signed up some new people. We also helped with the new Food4Hull stall, which attracted some interest   http://food4hull.co.uk/

It’s hard to pick out just a few stalls from the range and variety on offer, but my personal three this year would be

  • Avenues Bicycle Project  They really seem to have an efficient and well-established system going, for renovating donated bikes and assembling bikes from parts in order to send them to West Africa to provide affordable and sustainable transport  http://www.avenuesbicycleproject.org/
  • BAMEEN – Black and Minority Ethnic Environment Network.  This initiative has recently been started in Hull and aims to develop environmental champions from within the BME community, to promote more sustainable living by addressing recycling & waste, energy-saving and local food production  http://www.bameen.org.uk/
  • Child Dynamix  Bags – Beautiful bags – handbags, shoppers, – handmade by young people in East Hull from donated and discontinued fabrics.  Child Dynamix is a Hull Children and Young People’s charity and Bags of Rags is their latest social enterprise  http://www.bagsofrags.co.uk

Thanks especially to Hilary Byers of Hull Friends of the Earth and to all the people who helped her make such a success of this year’s Green Fair
