Hull Community Shop Affordable Food Project

Hull Community Shop – Affordable Food Project

The Hull Community Shop was set this up in summer 2016 as part of an Affordable Food Project and is located at the EMS offices at the Preston Road Village Centre, East Hull, open from 10am-5pm Monday to Friday.

The aim of the HCS is to provide nutritious and affordable food for individuals and families who are suffering from food poverty; the shop is open to the whole community, offering fresh food inc. fruit, vegetables, eggs, bread & confectionary in return for a ‘pay-as-you feel’ donation.  Residents that are on a low income can also apply to become HCS Members in order to access further support.

Accepted members are then offered support to engage with financial services, take up training and volunteering opportunities and apply for budgeting loans or community grants. They are also able to choose one day a week on which to access a wider range of produce via the shop, such as tinned goods and other ambient foods, which they can purchase at a heavily reduced rate.

All donations to the HCS from Members and the wider community is put back into the project to fund EMS’ purchase of tinned goods, cereal, tea and coffee, toiletries etc, thus helping the HCS to be sustainable.

Since July 2016, 60 residents have become members of the HCS, collectively accessing the shop over 700 times, with thousands of additional visits from the wider local community. On average 10 to 15 people access the HCS on a daily basis.

ENS is grateful to receive support, in the form of donations of store surplus, from Marks & Spencer, Tesco, One Stop and Sainsbury’s, as well as fresh food  donations from Dennis Butler Wholesalers and tin collections from Sacred Heart church.

Any donations of surplus fresh, tinned or ambient foods are always massively appreciated by ourselves and the HCS Members; the project relies on the generosity of local people and organisations in order to serve the local community.
