A small group of people is looking to explore the possibility of a cohousing development for the over 50s in the Cottingham area. It is envisaged that individuals would purchase their own homes, which would be built to passive house standards, re-using rain water, using solar energy and heat pumps, etc. There would be some communal facilities, the opportunity to eat together perhaps twice a week, and possibly communal veg growing.
The group has the responsibility to find the land, buy the land, arrange all aspects of the build, and members need to commit to an on-going share in the work needed to keep the group vibrant and thriving. There is guidance available but the management of the project is down to the group. There is no financial help to buy the homes, but architect fees and legal fees etc. may be covered.
East Riding of Yorkshire Council has made £4,000 available for the stage 1 exploratory phase, and if you are interested in becoming part of this small group please contact Margaret on 841303.

If you are interested in cohousing but this scheme for the over 50s in Cottingham is not for you, and you want to explore setting up a different scheme in East Yorkshire, Government money for community-led housing in East Yorkshire is available through East Riding of Yorkshire Council.
